Description
- Item No. G07825-1 Pinhead Gunpowder Tea
- This tea is one of the best-known Chinese teas and is produced in the Zhejiang Province in Eastern China. Gunpowder tea translates into Chinese, which means ‘pearl tea’. Tightly rolled into a tiny pellet resembling gunshot with a rich dark luster yield a pleasing liquor and a heavier body than many green teas. This infusion is characterized by full body and interesting high flavor notes with a hint of smokiness. Normally, a higher-grade leaf rolled even tighter. Much less tea is needed. Rolled leaves delicately unfurl and open into large oliver green leaves during brewing. The ‘pearls’ are much smaller, yielding a strong, almost nutty infusion. Believe or not, former President Richard Nixon drank this Pinhead Gunpowder Tea with Chinese leader Mao Ze Dong during their first meetings to normalize relations between the United States and China.
- All the leaves rolling into pellets may help keep it fresh for as long as possible on the long journey across the long distances and the oceans. Although the individual leaves were formerly rolled by hand, today all but the highest grades of gunpowder teas are rolled by machine.
