Gunpowder Tea Fine Quality

$8.77

(Item No. G07423-1)

Gunpowder tea, commonly called “Pearl Tea” in China, gets its name from the appearance of the leaves, which are in the sharps of pearl-like or  small pellets. This tea is made from young to medium leaves and a heavier body than many green teas. It takes about 5 hours for pan-firing, rolling, sorting process. Although the individual leaves were formerly by hand-rolling, today all but the highest grades of gunpowder teas are by machine-rolling. Rolling renders the leaves less susceptible to physical damage during packaging and storage. In addition, their shapes allow them to retain more of their flavor and aroma. The cup is of medium body with a crisp, spicy flavor, satisfying taste. Its grade is just next to Gunpowder Pinhead.

  • Gunpowder tea production started back to the Tang dynasty (618–907) in ancient China. Its English name comes either from some resemblance of the pellets to gunpowder, or from a phrase in Chinese that phonetically resembles the word “gunpowder”. This rolling method of shaping tea is most often applied either to green tea (the most commonly encountered variety outside China) or to oolong tea.
